With forever increasing rarity, interest and subsequent increasing values of all marques of classic cars and bikes, the need to take proactive and preventative action to protect is rising considerably. Although a classic car or bike was once a regular daily driver, many years on their present-day use has to be respected to provide adequate security.
A Classic Comparison - A key problem with classic vehicles is the simple fact that any security measures supplied with the original vehicle are no match for today’s resourceful criminals. For instance compare the complexity of a 2018 connected F-type Jaguar with a 1964 Series 1 XK-E. The latter has a value around twice that of its modern cousin, yet with little or nothing more than an insurance policy to replace the vehicle in the event of unrecovered theft – assuming it is ever recovered, or indeed replaceable.
Also worthy of recognition is the perhaps inappropriate nature of car insurance to a classic vehicle, whereby the insurer pays out an agreed value in cash and the owner simply sources a replacement vehicle. Fine for an F Type perhaps, but with a massive degree of emotion attached to your classic, a cash-replacement insurance policy is rarely enough to fill the vast emotional loss of the now-stolen car, which your father handed to you shortly before his death, or which you used to carry your new-born child home from hospital.
Classic Car Use
A classic car or bike is a perfectly viable everyday vehicle, however for many reasons most owners rarely use their vehicles; be it the sentimental value, fear of losing them or fear that overuse will accelerate their depreciation. Typically the vehicles are rarely used more than 2-4 weeks per year.
Such limited use then challenges the state of readiness for the majority of classic vehicles; are the tyres sufficiently inflated, has the rubber deteriorated over time, will the electric system have recovered from the winter temperatures and is the fuel even flammable still? However, a thief pays no respect for the physical driving-condition at the point of theft; their sole aim to steal as quickly as possible.
So how therefore can a classic vehicle security system be expected to protect all-year round with the same level of reactivity, despite the vehicle’s potentially un-roadworthy state?

In doing this, the tracker does not drain the vehicle battery during its normal course of duty.
Low Power - Our Classic Tracker is configured to reduce its own power consumption by entering into a GPS-sleep-mode whenever the ignition is switched off, and the vehicle is not moved. During this mode power consumption is below 10mA, so even if the owner received a notification from the tracker that the vehicle battery was failing, our Classic Tracker could theoretically still run well for over 14 days on a typical 40AHour car battery!
Whenever the vehicle is moved with ignition switched off, the GPS is brought out of sleep mode, ready to report its location in the event of any spurious activity. This low consumption aligns well with solar-battery conditioners used by classic car owners in the winter, which generally provide a minimum of 150mA; our tracker’s consumption-budget is well beneath this available value!
